Actavo was contracted by the Department of Education to provide a new modular building for Scoil Mhuire Lahinch, Co. Clare. Actavo Modular designed, manufactured and installed the new building which has added an additional 1,33m2 of primary school accommodation, as well as all additional site works necessary.
Scope of works
The new 5 module building consists of a large classroom, 2 no. adjoining SET rooms and two WCs.
Services delivered
The team excavated what was the original school playground, as well as utility diversions and all additional site works necessary to prepare the site for the new modular building.
Solutions to challenges
In additional to working on a tight site in a live school environment, weather was also a challenge due to the school being located in a coastal area. Logistical planning was required by the team to safely transport the modules when conditions were optimum. The 5 modules were lifted by crane onto the new site from the adjoining property.
Benefits to client
The new modular building will increase space for staff and students, mitigating the issue of overcrowding and creating a safer and more comfortable learning environment.
This addition of this building to the existing school will provide SEN teachers with their own space to work in, rather than sharing communal areas with multiple teachers.
Communal areas that were originally being used as classrooms now return to a space that can be used for extra-curricular activities for the students such as P.E. and drama.
