Actavo installed Rapid Build slip-form kerbs for the creation of purpose-built cycle lanes.
Scope of works
Excavate a trench with a narrow rock wheel. Following excavation, remove all loose material from the trench. Install a kerb using a slip-forming machine. Once poured, protect the kerb until sufficiently cured. Provide drainage gaps along the line of the kerb.
Services delivered
Concrete kerb construction.
Key successes
Bespoke design
This method was developed by Actavo for trenching and installing a specially designed kerb to create designated cycle lanes on busy urban streets. The design was so successful, it has been adopted by Dublin City Council for use elsewhere.
Health & Safety
The cycle lane was approved by An Garda Síochána. They indicated they want to see it rolled out elsewhere.
Quick turnaround
The kerb was laid in 4 days, meaning less impact for traffic, residents and the council.
Solutions to challenges
Normal concrete didn’t work in this instance, so a significant challenge was to develop a special concrete mix that suited this small kerb. Through a trial-and-error process, Actavo developed a unique mix with smaller chips, that fitted to the machine.
Benefit to client
Quick installation with minimal impact to traffic and residents.
