Actavo was contracted by the Department of Education to provide two new school buildings for Templeogue College CSSp. in Dublin. Actavo Modular designed, manufactured and installed two 22m x 11m modular single storey buildings, including all associated site works.
Scope of works
The 2no 6 module single storey buildings consist of four classrooms, two kitchenettes, a tank room and four WCs. Actavo carried out all civils works as well as construction of access ramps and steps.
Services delivered
Onsite civil works consisted of bulk excavation works, including the removal of 14 trees from the site.
Key successes
- The new school buildings were installed in one day over a weekend to ensure there was no disruption to the live school environment.
- Regular communication with the client with regards to clearing the site, the design and installation.
- Actavo liaised with a tree surgeon to ensure the trees were removed carefully and only when nesting season was over.
Solutions to challenges
Live ESB cables were discovered while digging the foundations. Actavo coordinated with ESB Networks to get the live cable safely rerouted. Actavo put in new ducting to ESB specifications to allow them to safely re-route the cable before the modular buildings were installed.
During excavation for laying the foundations, a watermain was found. Actavo rediverted the watermains to Uisce Eireann specifications away from the footprint of the new modular buildings.
The site did not have adequate falls for waste water to fall into existing services. The design team came up with a solution to install a pump chamber large enough to service the modular buildings.
Benefits to client
- There was very little disruption to the school and community as 80% of the works were carried out off-site.
- The A3 BER rating on all Actavo Modular school buildings offers a warm and comfortable teaching environment for students and staff.
- Weekly communication with the client and careful coordination with relevant people and departments ensured the project run as smoothly as possible.
- Actavo ensured there was safe passageway to and from the school at all times in case of emergencies and the carpark remained in use throughout the project.
