Actavo Civil Engineering is pleased to announce the commencement of construction works on the North Circular Road (Dorset Street Lower to Amiens Street) Active Travel Scheme, a key infrastructure project on behalf of Dublin City Council that will enhance walking, cycling and public transport facilities across Dublin's North Inner City. The scheme forms part of Dublin City Council's wider 314km Active Travel Network and will deliver significant improvements along a 1.1km section of the North Circular Road and Portland Row corridor.

The project will connect existing and planned active travel infrastructure, creating safer and more accessible routes for pedestrians and cyclists while supporting more sustainable modes of transport throughout the city.

Improving Connectivity and Sustainable Mobility

The North Circular Road Active Travel Scheme extends from the junction of Dorset Street Lower to Amiens Street at the Five Lamps and will provide an important link between existing cycling infrastructure on Amiens Street and North Strand Road, while also connecting with the proposed Swords to City Centre BusConnects route.

Upon completion, the scheme will deliver:

  • Segregated cycle tracks in both directions
  • Upgraded pedestrian facilities, including wider footpaths and improved crossing points
  • Safer junction layouts for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists
  • Six new bus stops to support future public transport services
  • Public realm enhancements, landscaping and additional greening
  • Road resurfacing, drainage, public lighting and utility upgrades
  • New road markings, traffic management measures and cycle infrastructure improvements.

These improvements are designed to encourage more people to walk, cycle and use public transport while creating a safer, more attractive and more connected urban environment.

Delivering Complex Urban Infrastructure

Actavo's Civil Engineering team will undertake a comprehensive programme of works that includes carriageway reconfiguration, cycle lane construction, drainage installations, footpath and kerb upgrades, public lighting improvements, traffic signal works, landscaping and public realm enhancements.

The project will be delivered in a live urban environment and requires careful coordination to maintain access for residents, businesses and road users throughout the construction period. Leveraging extensive experience in active travel infrastructure, public realm improvements and complex civil engineering projects, Actavo will work closely with Dublin City Council and local stakeholders to minimise disruption and ensure the safe delivery of the scheme.

Supporting Dublin's Active Travel Future

As cities continue to prioritise sustainable transport infrastructure, projects such as the North Circular Road Active Travel Scheme play a vital role in reducing congestion, improving road safety and supporting lower-carbon travel choices.

The scheme will improve connections to key destinations including Connolly Station, The Mater Hospital, Croke Park and educational facilities across the city, making active travel a more practical and attractive option for people living, working and travelling in Dublin.

Actavo is proud to support Dublin City Council in delivering this important investment in active travel infrastructure and looks forward to progressing the project in the months ahead.
