Building

Healthcare – Cork University Hospital

The new paediatric unit contained six wards, each holding six beds and a further 15 single bed rooms creating an additional 1600m² area with 51 beds.In order to keep site construction time to a minimal Actavo completed 80% of the works required offsite. Any works completed onsite were highly planned and co-ordinated in order to minimise any disturbance to the live hospital environment which surrounded the building site. The new facility has been purpose built on a 1.2m podium above the existing hospital, thus allowing all the services such as data connections, electrical cables etc. to be housed in an easily accessible yet hidden location.

Design feature on the building ensure that both the air tightness and the DB sound rating exceed current building regulations. A 55DB sound rating provides an environment patients have minimal noise disruption whilst being in care in the hospital wards. Whilst working in a live hospital environment infection control is critical, due to this Actavo operated to strict protocol and procedures in regards to infection control plans.

“We are very happy with the new unit. With limited space and a requirement to keep noise and traffic disruption to a minimum, a modular building was the ideal solution for the high-tech unit to be put in place while the existing paediatric department is being refurbished and extended. Our patients and staff were not disturbed during the build, which was a key reason we went with a modular offsite build."
